2011 Mummers Parade Portraits

The Mummers Parade is a a tradition in Philadelphia that dates back to the first parade in 1901 although it's roots date back to the mid 17th century.   It is not only a great parade, but a great party.  I was grateful to have an opportunity to photograph parts of this event.  The environmental portraits here are a  "shout out" to the Mummers that continue in this great spectacle.  I was also delighted with the balmy 40 degree temperatures versus the usual &$#! 25 degrees for New Years Day.

This is a portrait of one of the members in the Comic division.

The Wizard makes his way up Broad Street and casts a spell over the crowd.

Who says that country music is only in the South? These folks are having a good time dancing to a country beat as are all of the spectators.

Cleopatra and her entourage make their way up Broad Street.
The butterfly flies up Broad Street towards City Hall in the distance where the parade ends and the judging takes place.  This is an extraordinary event, full of fun for all ages.  The pictures and portraits here tell only part of the story.  To take it in, reserve your place on Broad Street on January 1, 2012.
